dry hop n bottling

dry hop n bottling

Postby MarioMutis » Fri Apr 02, 2010 1:25 am

hey guys,

so my first IPA i racked to a secondary and then my bottling bucket, not to mention i used 1oz to dry hop, so i had NO problem with hop filtration from my final product.

this time around though! different story. i used easily 3 times as much hops in boil, not to mention 3 oz in dry hop. i can see my yeast cake, the hop cake (my new beer term!) and then there is still a slight top layer floating on the beer in the carboy. 2 weeks of dry hopping is up on saturday so i wanna bottle this bad boy double IPA up!

any ideas on how to minimize sucking up a bunch of hops from both the top layer and bottom layer? the bottom layer stirs up VERY easily when i move the carboy and settles just as fast. thanks for any ideas fellas. ill bring some of my first recipe from scratch double ipa to the meeting.

I had this same problem with my Pliny the Elder clone. When I went to bottle, I moved the carboy to the table and found that there was a layer of hops floating on the surface. I found they would sink if I gently swirled the carboy. So I disturbed it slightly and then let it settle while preparing the rest of the bottling operations. I use an autosiphon to rack from carboy to bottling bucket, so I just make sure the inlet of the siphon is above the trub at the bottom and try not to worry too much about the hop debris that inevitably gets sucked up.

almost all of that debris settles at the bottom of the bottle when its chilled.
